Literacy Services of Indian River County Reading

A recipient of the Eric Bruell Distinguished Service Award from the Fragrance Materials Association, Ken Wessel founded Wessel Fragrances in New Jersey in 1988. Ken Wessel has supported many organizations in Florida, such as Literacy Services of Indian River County. This agency has helped many in south Florida acquire reading skills for themselves or family members.

Built on a philosophy of inclusion and respect, the group seeks to alleviate a serious problem. One out of five adults in the county have trouble with literacy skills, such as completing a job application or helping their children finish their homework. Improving the reading and writing skills of parents increases the likelihood of their children’s academic success. Literacy Services organizes one-on-one and group tutoring for adult basic education, preparations for the GED and citizenship examinations, and English as a second language.

Started by a small group of volunteers, the group recently celebrated its 50th anniversary with a celebration at Sea Oaks Beach Club. The evening was hosted by Bonnie Levison, a staff member for The Moth, which is a public radio program that presents storytelling on over 500 stations. Highlighted by several moving personal stories, the event was supported by over 40 sponsors.
